This was the first time the U16 Boys County Basketball Competition had taken place and is part of a national England Basketball pathway. The pathway has been introduced as a result of ongoing work by the Youth Sports Trust, National Governing Bodies and schools, to provide a clear progressive competition structure and align competition pathways from local to national, raising the profile of School Sport and Competition.
The first semi-final was between Thomas Deacon Academy, representatives of the Peterborough District, and St Neots, the representatives from Hunts. Whilst the tie was evenly matched in the first half, Thomas Deacon Academy ran out eventual winnders 37-21.
In the second semi-final, Cambridge District winners Chesterton Community College proved too strong for their opponents; Thomas Clarkson Community College, representatives of the Isle of Ely District, winning the game 75-8.
The final was set to be a Cambridge Versus Peterborough contest. Once again, Chesteron Community College proved too strong for their opponents, winning the match 58-21. However, credit must be given to Thomas Deacon Academy who showed tremendous fighting spirit, giving it their all until the final whistle.
Competition Manager for the Cambridge and South Cambs School Sport Partnerships and organiser of the event, James Cook, said: "It has been a fantastic event. Congratulations must go to each of the four teams for reaching the County FInal and representing their Districts. Thanks must also go to St Peters School for hosting the event, Paul Mostowyj, County Basketball Development Officer, and all of the schools involved for their support".
The Chesterton team has now been invited to represent the County at the Regional finals, with the opportunity of progressing all the way to the National Finals.
