Item: Girls Rugby Taster Day

Posted by:  Alison Anderson
Dated: Wed 2nd December 2009 2.34PM

The day was organised by a Partnership of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Competition Manager Team, the Cambridgeshire RFU, the Eastern Counties RFU and the Cambridge, South Cambs and Witchford School Sport Partnerships.

Girls of all abilities were invited to attend the day, the purpose of which was to raise people’s awareness of girl’s rugby and to encourage more girls to take up the sport. Those in attendance on the day received high quality coaching from the Eastern Counties RFU Community Rugby Coaches as well as an indoor ‘body management’ session, focused on stability, balance and how to fall safely delivered by former Commonwealth Judo Champion, Dave Southby.

Also in attendance was Sasha Acheson (pictured left), England U20 International, who was on hand to join in with the session and offer the girls a few words of advice. As well as increasing participation in the sport, the day was also used to identify talented players who will be invited to further training sessions before competing in the Emerging Schools Competition Pathway. Through this national pathway, the squad will represent Cambridge in the County finals (10th February 2010) and also the Eastern Counties finals, with the potential of progressing onto regional and national competitions. Andrew Skipper, Club and Coach Officer for the RFUW was in attendance on the day and was delighted with the Girls Rugby Structure that has been put in place across the county.

James Cook, Competition Manager for Cambridge and South Cambs School Sport Partnerships, and co-organiser of the event said, “It was fantastic to see so many girls enjoy playing rugby and we hope that they will be encouraged to continue playing in future. It was great that we were able to link some judo training into the day to show how skills can be transferred across sports. Thanks must go to Dave Southby and the Eastern Counties RFU for supporting the event, and to Shelford RFC for hosting the day.”
