Children from the seven finalist primary schools met at Netherhall School, hoping to be crowned Cambridge SSP Indoor Athletic Champions 2012. The schools had all won through from their local cluster groups Virtual League Competition. Ten Yr 5&6 boys and girls from each school were put through their paces jumping, running and throwing their way to success in the Indoor Athletics Pentathlon event, as part of the recognised national schools programme.
Sixth Form Leaders from Netherhall ran the whole event and were a credit to the school. Stickers highlighting the Olympic values of excellence and friendship were awareded by the leaders as the competitors took part. Alice Ellison, the Partnerships Platinum Young Ambassador, also from Netherhall School, talked to the children about how her role as a Young Ambassador led to her selection by the City Council, as a local Torch Bearer for the Olympic Torch Relay.
Cheveley, the reigning champions, were there to defend their title, but it was not to be. In a competitive contest St Laurence Catholic Primary School came out the clear winners, with Abbey Meadows Primary School finishing runners-up, just ahead of 3rd placed St Philips Primary School. Both St Laurence and Abbey Meadows will now go through to represent the Partnership at the County Finals on 7th March, at St Ivo Sports Centre.
