Introduction to Disc Sports
Tuesday 9th September 2008

Course Aims: You are invited to take part in a Disc Sports (Frisbee) training course. It will be a practical session so please come prepared to break a sweat!

On the course you will learn fundamental Frisbee skills in throwing, catching and team-play. You will also learn how to teach children these skills and how to play and set up a range of fun games, drills and official disc sports including Ultimate Frisbee and Disc Golf, suitable for Key Stages 3 & 4. By taking part you will receive a Disc Sports Pocket Handbook, an illustrated quick reference guide to Frisbee skills and games with curriculum links.

Course Aims: Sports skills is a motor development programme aimed at improving both fine and gross motor skills. It also looks to accommodate pupils who find it difficult to access the normal PE curriculum and is ideal for pupils with a wide range of special educational needs.

Hockey Leaders Course

Course Aims: Have you ever thought of becoming a hockey leader?

If so, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get into hockey coaching. Cambridge City Council Sports Development Service in partnership with England Hockey is running a Hockey Leaders course this autumn.

The course runs over two days - Sunday 28th September and Sunday 5th October 2008. It is open to males and females aged 14+ years and the cost is £30 which covers the assessment and resource pack.

Netball High 5 Umpiring

Course Aims: The course is aimed at teachers, parents and volunteers in primary schools to help increase knowledge of High 5s rules and confidence to umpire a High 5 match.

The course is practical so please wear appropriate clothing and bring a whistle and pencil.

Safe Teaching of Gymnastics at KS1

Course Aims: This practical course will focus on the effective teaching of gymnastics including lesson structure, health and safety aspects and content/material. The session will include simple skills developing into a range of teaching tasks appropriate to support pupils learning within gymnastics. Various practical activities will be used to develop participants subject knowledge and teaching approaches with gymnastics.

Participants need to wear suitable clothing and footwear to participate in practical activity.

Aims of the Course:

* to provide information and develop knowledge about the effective teaching of gymnastics at KS1 including safe handling of apparatus

* to consider the lesson structure, content and a range of teaching/learning tasks

* to discuss the layout and effective usage of apparatus

* to discuss planning and progression within the context of KS1 gymnastics

Trampoline Refresher Course

Course Aims: This course is organised by British Gymnastics and is open to PE teachers who already hold their teachers trampoline award/qualification, non qualified PE teachers/coaches who hold a BG LVL 2 Trampoline Coach or equivalent Certificate of Qualification.

This qualification will enable teachers to teach trampolining within the school curriculum up to front and back somersault.

Course Aims: This practical courese focuses on the effective teaching of dance at KS1. Participants will experience the process of developing dance materials and using relevant compositional principles to create a dance. The course will consider a range of tasks that focus on performance and compositional features to aid the development of pupils dance repertoire.

* to develop confidence and ideas for the effective teaching of dance at KS1

* to experience the process of dance development i.e. starting from an initial stimulus and finishing with a final composition

Body Preparation & Core Skills
Friday 24th October 2008

Venue: Milton Road Primary School

Course Aims: This course is intended to link with the new Association for Physical Education (AfPE) resource "A Practical Guide to Teaching Gymnastics" and will break down gymnastic skills into small achievable steps to allow all children access to gymnastics. Teachers will be shown how to help all children to gain confidence through controlling their bodies during gymnastic activity. The course will include practical demonstrations of body preparation exercises linked to progressive teaching of core skills. Forward and backward rolls, headstand, handstand and cartwheel are the main target skills.

The aims of the course are:

* to help teachers understand the teaching of identified core gymnastic skills

* to demonstrate the underpinning body preparation to perform these skills safely

* to use small progressive steps to teach core skills

* to demonstrate how the teaching of Health Related Fitness & Physical Literacy skills can contribute to the safe and successful delivery of gymnastics
